Surface Grinding and Lubricants
Grinding is the mechanical process of reshaping or cutting the materials. One of the major types of grinding most widely used is surface grinding. Surface grinders involve a spinning wheel which cuts chips of metals and non metals to flatten or smoothing the substance. In surface grinding, the wheel is covered with rough particles that enable it to smooth en or flatten the metallic or non metallic substances.
The work piece is passed multiple times under the wheel to ensure there is no problem while resetting it. The technique involves good care as the condition of wheel is an important part. Maintenance of the wheel is done through diamond dressers. Certain fluids such as lubricants are used to cool the work piece and wheel. Lubricants like petroleum-based oils, water soluble oils and synthetic oils are also required to smooth en the interface and for the removal of swarf. Use of lubricants depends on work piece material. The different types of lubricants involved range from Aluminum/Brass Light duty oil, light duty chemical and synthetic oil to Mild steel water-soluble oil, Stainless steel mollifiable oil, and heavy duty chemical oil amongst others. There are some other materials as well that are required to cool the inner surface and are referred to as coolants.
